Explanatory notes

ARRANGEMENT OF LOCATIONS. The locations are arranged geographically, starting with the most southerly and moving northwards.

GAUGE. The gauge of each rail system and its equipment is 610mm unless otherwise indicated.

LOCO LIVERY. As an aid to recognition, the basic colour scheme applied to the main-line locomotives at each location is shown. Navvy locos and line cars may be painted differently.

NUMBER AND NAME. The title of the locomotive - number, name or both - is given in the first two columns. An official identity not currently carried is shown in brackets.

An unofficial name not carried on the loco is shown by inverted commas. The abbreviation "form." denotes a former identity.

TYPE. The current wheel arrangement and motive power is shown (which may not be the same as when built). The Whyte system of wheel classification is used in the main, with Continental classification used for bogie locomotives. When the driving wheels of a four-wheeled rigid frame locomotive or line car are not connected by rods but by chains or other means, it is shown as 4w (four-wheeled), or if only the rear axle is motorised it is shown as 2-2w. The following additional abbreviations are used:

BP Locomotive chassis converted to unpowered ballast plough

BW Locomotive chassis converted to unpowered brake wagon

DH Diesel locomotive with hydraulic or hydrostatic transmission

DM Diesel locomotive with mechanical transmission

PHR Petrol personnel carrier with hydrostatic transmission

PMR Petrol personnel carrier with mechanical transmission

MAKER. The builder of the locomotive is shown in column four; the abbreviations used are listed on another page.

MAKER'S NUMBER, DATE & MODEL. The fifth and sixth columns shows the works number and the date ex works. In some cases, the information shown on the plate is erroneous, and this is noted where appropriate. The seventh column shows the maker's model number.

MILL In those few case where locomotives across a district are numbered in a unified series and may be used indiscriminately between mills, the usual base for each locomotive is shown by a code letter.

DOUBTFUL INFORMATION. Information known to be doubtful is shown in brackets with a question mark.

REBUILDING DETAILS. Rebuilding details are only shown when the locomotive was regauged, underwent radical structural or mechanical change, or where the rebuilding was carried out by an outside contractor. Sugar mills frequently carry out extensive overhauls on cane railway locomotives. Many of the locomotives have had new cabs fitted which are quite different in profile from the original, and details of these changes are not listed.

LOCOMOTIVES PURCHASED FOR REBUILDING. In recent years, numbers of ex-main line locomotives have been purchased by sugar mills and stored for future rebuilding and regauging. Some such locomotives are stored at locations other than the sugar mill in question.

MILL RAILWAY INTERCONNECTIONS. Rationalisation of the industry, particularly since 1988, has led to some sugar mill railways being interconnected under common ownership. Apart from making inter-mill locomotive transfers easier, locomotives are sometimes to be seen working over the metals of an adjacent mill on short-term loan or on transfer traffic. These mill connections are as follows: Racecourse, Pleystowe, Marian & Farleigh Mills; Victoria & Macknade Mills; and South Johnstone, Mourilyan & Babinda Mills. Uniquely, Kalamia & Invicta Mills are also connected via a substantial length of mixed gauge trackage shared with Pioneer Mill.

RACECOURSE, PLEYSTOWE, MARIAN & FARLEIGH MILLS

Mackay Sugar Co-operative Association Ltd.

Mackay Sugar came into existence with the amalgamation of six different mills in 1988. Two have since been closed (North Eton & Cattle Creek). Track is interconnected between all mills.

North Eton depot (Pleystowe Mill) is also used as a store for unwanted equipment.

Navvy out-depots are at Finch Hatton (Marian Mill) and Calen (Farleigh Mill).

Locomotives were numbered in a common series in 2001 and may be transferred indiscriminately between mills to meet operating requirements. Pleystowe Mill did not crush in 2002-3. Some of its locos were allocated elsewhere during this period while others remained at Pleystowe to haul cane for other mills.

Loco livery: Red, Green & Yellow; Green & Yellow; Yellow & Red
